Another great friend in more ways than one, he was a bit of a conman if you know what I mean , into anything that was going, and of course a few times I got inadvertently involved.
Was having one of those times, out of work and receiving social security
payments, most commonly called the dole, as usual time on my hands and was in the bar having a natter with the barman, place was empty, when in walked blue, after passing the usual pleasantries and knowing I wasn't working he offered me a casual job.
Paid $20 free lunch and a pint for a few hours in the mornings mending pallets at his yard near the brewery, now add that up, $ 100 on top of the dole, certainly I would lose $50 of that after declaring my income with the dole office even $ 50 would help a lot , so I said I would start in the morning.
On arrival he gave me a hammer nails a jemmy bar showed me what to do , introduced me to about 6 others working there and retired to his office lunch time came, knock off time he says, down to the pub and lunch with the beer, and paid me the $20.
This went on for a few days and each day would find someone else working there though no greater than 6. This morning we were working away when all of a sudden things went quiet, looking up I noticed I was the only one there –all gone , I saw blue talking to a chap in his office .
After the chap had left Blue came over and said , pack up Kev enough for today we'll go down to the pub for an early lunch I asked where the others got to and he said they all finished early, well with all the hammering going on and me being a conscientious worker I let that one slide.
A few days later there was another group at work, one of which I recognised as having been before, geez kev he said, you were slow the other day , didn't you recognize the inspector from the dole office.
And Geez i'm slow at times
