That Darn Dog

I've seen lots of posts about the things that cats and kittens can get into at Christmas. Well here is my dog tale.

We picked up my Mum before Christmas to bring her to our home for the holidays. She gave us some fruitcake (I know there will be a discussion about its merits but we like fruitcake). My husband loaded up the car and the fruitcake got tossed into my bag at the last minute. My bag was put into the car instead of the truck. Oops!!!!

We stopped at Canadian Tire along the way to buy a new coffeemaker as our old one had died the day before. When my husband returned to the car he saw the dog engrossed in something and then he saw all the crumbs around his lips (do dogs have lips?). The dog had found the fruitcake and he was happily savouring this special treat. The remainder of the fruitcake (luckily he hadn't eaten it all) went into the garbage. To me this was an unusual event as I am normally very careful not to leave food anywhere that the dog can reach.

During the rest of Christmas everything went well as all the goodies were kept high above his reach. BUT, on the day that we returned my Mum home I gave her a few goodies including some home made spiced almonds. They went into the top of one of her bags and guess where my husband put it - in the trunk? No, he put it inside the car. We were sitting on the ferry when suddenly I wondered if any food items had been put into the car by mistake. I rushed back to the car deck and saw the dog finish off the last of the nuts. He had also eaten (I think) some of the bag. Thankfully, the dog didn't seem to suffer any after-affects from these two events.
