No, it isn't Julie Andrews storming up the mountainside, arms outstretched and belting out that song!
Nor is it me, with my dance tunes cranked up making the house vibrate in time to the rhythm.
It's the birds!
You may or may not know that I've been working hard at attracting birds to my yard for the past 5 years. I've had a lot of resistance and obstacles with things like squirrels, skunks, raccoons and the neighbor's cat.
However, today here in Eastern Ontario, the temperatures are 41F or 6C, it's very mild and things are melting.
If I didn't know better by the calendar, I'd think it was surely the first day of Spring.
Sitting out back on the deck in my parka and boots, I can see so many birds that I'm amazed! Up in the trees and down on the ground pecking and scratching like tiny hens at the seeds that have fallen from the feeders above.
And the thing that has me mesmerized is the SOUND of all of them! I can't remember when I've been around to hear so many of them chattering and whistling - what a beautiful noise!
Things quieten for a moment as they all fly down to forage in the snow.
Then suddenly, a passing car or some sound or thing will disturb them and like the rushing sound of angel wings - whoosh! - they're gone.
They sit quietly and watchful up in the trees waiting for one of the braver ones to take the lead and the rest to follow down again.
Some of them I can identify as chickadees, American goldfinches, evening grosbeaks, blue jays, nut hatches and siskins - all still in their winter garb.
I feel a sense of wonder, pleasure and gratitude for these tiny creatures that grace my yard and truly hope that as the seasons progress they will stick around to spread a little joy in my backyard.
