Rant & Rave #10

I’m feeling kind of “grizzly” right now.
I have a cold.
However, I’d like to write about something that is really burning my butt – blow off a little steam if you will.

I recently have heard from close friends of mine, both female in their mid-fifties, that they were taken into their bosses’ office & informed that their jobs/positions no longer existed as of Monday.
Both of these women are highly intelligent & excel in their respective fields.
One of them is a university graduate & the other has approximately 30 years of experience under her belt.
Now, due to economic times & corporate cut backs (or so they claim) these people have been tossed aside, lost their benefits & are literally left out in the cold.
What kind of message is that sending to our students that have embarked on 3-5 year schooling commitment, up to their eyes in student loans, to ensure their futures in their chosen fields?
Personally, knowing this & being aware of the instability of ANY chosen profession, if I were a student these days, I’d been thinking long & hard about what road to choose.
Why go to school & bust your ass, accumulate an enormous debt in doing so, only to find a job, if you’re lucky, work hard for a few decades only to get the boot?
It doesn’t make sense & it isn’t fair!
My kids; one has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology; a huge government grant to repay & is currently working as a manager in a music store (quite happily). Upon their graduation from university, they learned that in order to get a job in their chosen field they would have to go back to college for ANOTHER 2 years (more debt) before they would qualify. Hence, they chose NOT to go into any further debt & to seek out other options for employment.
The other kid; got a grant to go to college, attended for a few months only to find it wasn’t what they thought it would be & dropped out. It was only later & by accident that they found their niche in carpentry & is now a certified carpenter – after several years of on the job training & 3 years (semesters) of schooling.
It puzzles me to see so many young people taking 4-5 university courses, assuming huge student loans then after it all not even staying in that field!
What’s wrong with this picture?
And to top it all off, even if students stick it out, faithfully repay their student loans, work faithfully & devotedly, there’s no guarantee that in a few short decades they’re going to be tossed aside & left with nothing.
I suppose students have to learn to gamble at an early age because just like everything else in life – there are no guarantees.
It just angers me that after the investment of time & energy there is no such thing as “job stability/security.”
So if you’re in a job you like & you can support yourself – good for you!!
But don’t get comfortable.
P. S. I told you I was feeling grizzly! Sniff, blow & cough (yuk!)
