. . . I couldn’t sleep for the rain and ice pellets driving against my bedroom windows.
Sleep wouldn’t come and my mind wondered downstairs to the cellar.
The sump pump hadn’t come on for what seemed like forever and I lay there imagining the seeping water rising and flooding around the furnace and water heater.
Oh gawd . . . I jumped up and threw on my robe – no slippers.
My rubber boots were on the basement stairs if I needed them.
Hurrying downstairs, I surprised and scared my old cat as she flew into the living room – her nails clicking on the kitchen floor as she scrambled. The sound almost made me giggle – that’s how tired I was.
I switched on the light and peered down the old stairs into the cellar to see a wet floor but no accumulation of water.
The dehumidifier purred contentedly.
Whew!
I took my time as I trudged back upstairs to bed and wondered how I would ever fall asleep.
I lay there, staring at the now snow and ice covered skylight and could hear the wind moan outside in the cedars.
Rocks and boulders boomed in the creek out back as they were tossed around by the speed and volume of the rushing water.
It was a nocturnal symphony of natural sounds that if recorded and played back would not put you in the slumber or sleep mode.
I tried to concentrate on how safe, warm and comfortable I was in my cozy bed and it worked.
Next thing I knew, it was time to get up, although I had no idea what time it was since my clock was flashing and that meant that the power had been off . . . . Oh gawd!
I’d better go and check the cellar, again.
I need a cup of coffee.
