She sounds like a gem! Life in the Third World, especially in rural areas, can be challenging but you gain so much perspective from living outside the U.S. I left the Third World to come to the US and my parents want me back in Mexico. P.S. I fixed the glitch in my blog...you made me sweat thinking that I was censored. Thanks!

Wal-Mart and its rapacious brethren will begin to fade because people in the more rural parts of America will refuse to pay the 10 or 15 bucks in fuel costs for a round-trip drive to the nearest big box mega-outlet just to get some crackers and shampoo and some nails. And the world will improve. A little. However, I do not underestimate the power of Wal-Mart to viciously alter the time/space continuum for their own benefit, and to figure out a way around the transport issue, perhaps by cutting the pay of their sweatshop workforce from eight cents a month to four and by strapping enormous pallets of crappy ink-jet printers and porcelain Jesus figurines to the backs of trained dolphins and send them over from Shanghai. They are just that kind of malevolent.

You have squashed my idealism. Revolutionaries are not supposed to end up this way; betraying the cause. Mexico had its "ten days" four years before Russia. If they didn't shake the world, they radically changed the social, economic and political structures of the country. The Revolution ended or as some inveterate (cynical?) guerrillas used to say, degenerated into government. "¿Si el país entero se alegra por la muerte de delincuentes, cual es la razón de privar de la recompensa a quien propicia la alegría? Por lo tanto, o dejamos de ser hipócritas y aceptamos la degradación de nuestros principios, o nos convencemos que en guerra, el pago de este tipo de recompensas se mira desde otro contexto. En ambos casos, a pagar se dijo."

VERY funny...but not all of us snoozed in church...some of us actually took notes and organized outlines in order to be prepared for the Rapture and Armageddon
If Obama's pastor is wacky, take a look at John Hagee. Hagee's "lectures" are rather involved and he is the master of multisensory teaching!

Hang in there. I do not trust American medicine; not at all.

Happy Birthday! Glad your family was near. Mine is not allowed anywhere near the US border due to several provisions in the Patriot Act along with their Marxist affiliations.

I hate Spring. My students' hormones are raging, the standardized tests are due and allergies. But...ONLY 12 more weeks and it's summer vacation! This is why teaching is so rewarding!

Naomi Wolf is right on the money. As to joining the military because it is better than a Disney cruise, a "romantic" adventure...now that really set me off!!! My husband is a guidance counselor in poor Dallas high school. He ONLY keeps his mouth shut when the recruiters come because I have BEGGED him not to antagonize. Day in and day out the recruiters "visit" with economically disadvantaged kids. They make a "You-Can-Be-Macho-War-Is-Cool" multimedia presentation. It is beyond disgusting. I read somewhere that the San Francisco public schools were NOT allowing these vipers to proselytize war on their turf.

Bumped, I am sure that I am under surveillance for subscribing to Mother Jones and protesting outside the American Embassy in Mexico City. Many of my librarian colleagues are also under surveillance for shredding patron records in direct disobedience to the Patriot Act...these are the guerrilla librarians. They mean business. We have been instructed to delete records. I ought to leave the US for good. I have no idea what I am still doing here.

Solitaire, I belong to the last group too! What stinks is having to hide it at work. I work with Baptists so I have to be a "Fake-Baptist" or I would lose my job. We are the most hated minority in America.

I meant, rule of law. Cheney is a classic authoritarian. He has no use for the public other than to get him into power and attempt to subvert the constitutional powers and establish an unchecked executive branch. It has been working for them, so “#### the people”. For the electorate, it’s kinda like picking Joan Crawford to be your mom.

Cheney is never on the mark. Ever. Trusting in "leaders" leads to dictatorships.BushCo has no respect for institutions or the right of law. Cheney does what is best for Cheney. "The American people" is quite a construct...wouldn't know where to begin pulling that apart. One-sided media? Only if you plug yourself into the FAUX News Channel.
