A 1631 edition of the King James Bible caused the monarch great embarrassment when a crucial word was missed out. When listing the Ten Commandments, the printers accidentally omitted the word “not”, thus telling followers: “Thou shalt commit adultery”. The mistake was spread through a number of texts before King James ordered the publishers to be fined and the offending bibles to be burnt. Eleven copies of the “Wicked Bible” are still extant today.
