Imagining that you are surrounded by a permeable cocoon of golden light, allowing love energy in and keeping negative energy out, can help you retain this sense of detachment without distancing yourself too much. Using this visualization might make it easier for you to not only hold others in love and compassion but also to keep this same space for yourself.
Learning to be compassionate toward others, while at the same time taking care of ourselves, is a healthy way to approach our personal interactions. Because of the nature of our intimate relationships, we can so effortlessly slip into unhealthy ways of being—taking on others’ problems and making them our own. Picturing a space where we are safe, where we can be receptive to such problems but not be negatively touched by them, lets us disconnect from the harmful energy we might pick up on but still open our hearts up to someone else’s needs. Detaching with loving energy will give you much more calm and stability to cope with the problems that exist in your relationships today.
