An Electrifying Thanksgiving
So my sister and her husband wanted to travel almost 500 hundred miles to come visit my family and me for Thanksgiving. I hadn't seen them in four years and I was so happy and excited! They got here Wed. afternoon and we mostly just took it easy that night. She had already "cooked" her side dishes and brought them in an ice chest. Mine were green bean casserole, canned cranberry sauce, rolls and pumpkin pie. All easy things that just needed to be heated through. The turkey was, of course, the main entree'. We planned on eating around two p.m. on Thursday. Ah, yes. Best laid plans.
Chilly, drizzling Thursday morning. No big deal. We have a covered deck to hang out on while we waited for time to start cooking. My brother-in-law was going to cook the turkey so my sister and I decided to go do a little shopping... Dollar General, Walgreens, Foodworld for some pies. (Didn't take long for her to talk me into buying the pies instead of baking them, lol.) Anyway, we head back home and at the turn into my little neighborhood, something doesn't look quite right. I think it was the telephone pole broken in half and all the power lines laying in the street and the pieces of car strewn about the side of the road. Oh, and all the people standing around. Oy! The two young men who blamed the wreckage on wet roads (where in the world were the tire tracks in the wet grass? Just how fast were they going?) were ok, thank God. But we were without power for about 6 hours. My brother-in-law and husband quickly got a fire going in the smoker. Best turkey we've ever eaten but we didn't eat until around 6:30 that night. Best laid plans....
Ok, so now it's about 8 o'clock a.m. the next morning. My sister is sitting on the deck smoking and I leave to go get my newspaper at the mailboxes. I come back, get out of my car and hear what sounded like branches cracking. My sister said that was the third time she heard it since I left. And the lights inside would flicker every time we heard "branches cracking". My husband was inside still asleep but my brother-in-law came out to hear it. It made the noise again and this time SMOKE CAME OUT OF THE GROUND!!!. SAY WHAT??? Ok so we called the electric company. The guy came out about 3 hours later. Silly us, we thought it was an emergency. Apparently the power company didn't. Anyway, turns out the former resident had run an electric line from the old shed to our meter box. And of course, I should have awakened my husband BEFORE I called the power company because he knew about the line. So, they cut the line from the meter box and we had no more flickering of lights or smoke coming up from the wet ground. All's well that ends well.
I sure know how to throw an electrifying Thanksgiving getaway!
