Why Believing in God is Damaging to Your Mind and Body.
Homo sapiens’ sole distinction is a stupendous brain that can more or less simultaneously process survival essentials, emotions, abstract notions of morality, and concepts such as beauty; while storing data necessary to make rapid commonsense decisions and intuitive responses. Even more remarkable is that this can be done while working, talking, looking, listening, forming opinions and wondering how? why? what if?
This should have us either racing off in all directions, or paralysed by indecision; but it doesn’t. Why? Because we constantly ask ourselves: “What will be the consequences of this action?†This is Reason, the ‘rubber band’ holding our psyche together; prioritising thoughts, desires, feelings and actions. When Reason fails, insanity prevails.
For most of human existence the natural world provided answers to the how and why questions. Spirits protecting natural resources had the added benefit of ensuring respect for the environment.
When humans moved to cities, animist shamans were replaced by priests who invented supernatural gods with terrifying powers of creation, destruction and punishment. The god of Abraham is immortal, invisible, omniscient, omnipotent; a supernatural fellow that not only created and maintains the entire universe, but also takes a personal interest in every detail of individuals lives: – health, career, sexuality, faith and so on... so he can decide whether to torture sinners for eternity after death, or subject the faithful to eternal boredom in heaven. The chilling fact is that billions of humans believe thisego-maniacall nonsense!
Implanting such a monstrously irrational notion at the core of human brains, short-circuits rationality and commonsense, resulting in a plague of self-centred humans destroying their planet through god-sanctioned overpopulation, exploitation, species destruction, pollution, persecution and war. The irrationality of god-belief has rendered so many humans insane, they’ve irreparably damaged their sole source of sustenance – the natural world in which they evolved.
So,will pass.
