My light and my life Â
provided me hope for a future, Â
a reason to live Â
and the strength to exist. Â
Suddenly extinguished, Â
taken away without warning. Â
I was abandoned, Â
left in the darkness Â
trying to survive Â
searching for any glimmer Â
on the distant horizon. Â
I stand precariously Â
on a piece of solid ground Â
barely large enough for my feet. Â
Around me, a vast expanse Â
of desolation and emptiness Â
for as far as I can tell. Â
It waits Â
with extending arms Â
to engulf and surround me Â
in a permanent shadow. Â
I remain tenuously balanced Â
on this small bit of solid footing Â
Providing me the last vestiges of hope, Â
Unsure where to turn Â
or how to find an escape. Â
No path in sight, Â
it has decayed into the abyss. Â
No light to guide my footsteps, Â
it has been withdrawn. Â
In complete blackness Â
I close my eyes Â
waiting to fall. Â
A light appears before me Â
no, Â
from within me. Â
I discover Â
a brilliance inside Â
An internal source of strength, power Â
and illumination. Â
This force surges through my body Â
filling me with courage. Â
I open my eyes once more in the darkness Â
finally lose my balance, Â
and descend Â
into the eternal night. Â
But in falling, I discover Â
that I possess wings. Â
With new courage, my own light, Â
and wings to save me Â
from the everlasting darkness Â
I take flight Â
high above the waiting chasm Â
towards a faint glimmer Â
far on the horizon Â
and hope.  by kristi Dyer
