Sex

My sister, Katherine, and I just watched ABC Family's "hit original series" The Secret Life of the American Teenager  [ or as we like to call it TSLOTAT]. I personally find the show ridiculously funny, however unintended that hilarity may be. Katherine on the other hand finds the overstressed theme/conflict of teenagers having sex completely relevant.Seriously Kat? Basically the show is about a bunch of high school [maybe middle school, who really knows? all sets look the same to me] girls standing at opposite ends of the earth fighting about the mileage which separates them.

One character, whose name leaves me at the time [ wow what an impression that actress left!] makes sure to have sex at least three times in every episode and apparently she'll do it with anyone; she propositioned the school shrink [ hello! they call him a shrink for a reason!]. The folks over at ABC Family play a nice little Latin beat every time slut-girl enters. No matter what she's doing you can picture a mariachi band somewhere on the sound stage.

The next character, appropriatly named Grace, is extremly religious and annoying. It's totally fine with me if she doesnt want to have sex until marriage; I mean hey more power to you, but does she have to somehow make that selibacy factor apart of every conversation she's in?! While being attacked by a duo of middle aged truckers she nealed down to pray, that is before she picked up a beer bottle and threatened to shank the pervs.

The last girl, who I guess is the main character, is pregnant. That's pretty much it about her; her sisters also a really bad actress.
What I really wanted to get to though is that main theme, sex. As we see in our little microcosm, TSLOTAT, for some girls sex is a huge milestone and for others it's like breathing. What differentiates those girls? Are some girls just born with the want for constant sex, and in that case are others born with an aversion to it? The girls on this show are supposed to be like 14. I've been a 14 year old girl, and I know I wasn't looking for a little lovin in 8th grade. Somebody has to explain this to me, IS SEX A BIG DEAL?!

Just one more thing...since when has sex and teenagers been a "secret." It's not like all these high school kids running around are living double lives. They'd probably even be willing to admit it if you asked. ABC Family should really consult some actual teenagers before making a teen drama. They should also make better friends with the casting department who apparently hates them for giving this show such a terrible cast of actors/actresses[ except for Molly Ringwald, what can I say Pretty in Pink is my favorite movie] . The writing group probably should get a fruit basket as well...
