In 1936, with Hitler in attendance the summer Olympics held center stage in Germany.
Jesse Owens, a black American and the grandson of slaves, won four gold medals, shattering Hitler's plan to show the world his idea of Aryan superiority. In all, black athletes won 13 medals that year.
Though Hitler awarded other medals, he was a conspicuous "no show" to award Owens and other blacks their medals.
