Getting to the Vulture Capital of the Southeast
On the way to Fort Meyers Florida and the housing bust. This blog series is about different people at vacation spots on the way down the east coast of the U.S. Each has, in one way or another, a fascinating life story to tell. All the individuals are engaged in, or describing, unique experiences which they are willing, frequently eager, to share. For those who would listen carefully, the activities depicted and the stories told are always embedded in human settings (places) and are subject to the influence of those surroundings.
Morality Play in Battery Park, Charleston, S.C.
The local newspapers tell of two warring gangs in Charleston who come out after dark. One has taken over the area east of Meeting Street and the other believes it owns everything west of Meeting Street. That appears to make Meeting Street (the historic area) either the safest place in town or an opportunity to run a challenging gauntlet. It is my preferred daytime passage, both in and out. But conflict takes many forms and is certainly not limited to the evening nor is it the exclusive monopoly of juveniles in gangs.
