Living Waters 08.15.08
Hello My Friend/Guest,
It is Friday August 15, 2008 and today we are beginning our studies on the book of Jeremiah. Please read Chapters 1-3 in your Bible or Click Here to read. Cut & Paste to your browser: biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah%201-3&version=9
The book of Jeremiah is the twenty-fourth book of the Old Testament and was written by the prophet Jeremiah to Judah. The purpose of the book was to warn them of the coming judgment of captivity and call for them to repent. What we learn from this book is that national disasters and deteriorations of the world are often due to disobedience to God.
Today we will read and learn about Jeremiah's call from God; his message to Judah about their belief in idols; and his pleas for Judah to repent of their sinful ways. Today's message focuses on the importance of realizing that we need to study and tell others the true Word of God. Satan's lies will take the place of God's blessings in our lives if we don't know God's Word.
Jeremiah lived about 100 years after Isaiah, you will notice a pattern that is very common today, the faithful versus the unfaithful. At one time our nation lived for God, but slowly wordly things took over and became our idols. God revealed to Jeremiah that He has a plan and purpose for each of us even before we are born. "Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." (Jeremiah 1:4-5). Through Jeremiah's revelation concerning the origin of human life, it is revealed that our birth is not our real beginning, nor will our death be our end.
In the desert climate of Palestine, water was the first necessity for human existence. No one would exchange an artesian well with abundant water for a man-made, broken cistern that could hold no water. God holds Judah accountable for two evils, abandonment and destruction of the Living Waters. "For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken (abandoned) me the fountain of living waters, and hewed (carved) them out cisterns (pots), broken cisterns, that can hold no water." (2:13).
Jesus is the Source of all that nourishes, enriches, and satisfies our souls, He is the Fountain of Living Waters. He provides us with water that quenches our thirst physically as well as spiritually and real satisfaction is only available from Him. We are the cisterns that hold the Living Waters as we soak up God's Word through reading and
All sin is forsaking God and the dream of self satisfaction often leads to disappointment and a spiritual death. We become so involved in our own desires and wants that we lose sight of God and die spiritually and it is the Living Waters that revive us. "In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." (John 7:37-38).
It was not easy for Jeremiah to go to his people and boldly confront them about the judgement of God upon their country, but he was only to speak what God commanded of him. Just as Jeremiah obeyed the command of God we too are to obey Him by speaking the truth about Jesus to the lost and backsliders of the world. That is why it is so important to provide the true Word of God and lessons such as these for all who seek them.
In today's reading Jesus Christ is revealed as the Fountain of Living Waters (Jeremiah 2:13). Jesus is the only Fountain that can satisfy the thirsty soul.
Today's Prayer:
Dear Lord,
I confess that there are times when my spirit becomes dry and I am left thirsting for something to quench my thirst. Lord, draw me to the Living Waters that quench and invigorate my spirit so that I am refreshed in the Holy Spirit and renewed in my resolve to follow You all the days of my life. In Jesus' name.....Amen.
Have a wonderful and blessed day and weekend!
God Bless,
Christina
