Today we will read and about the devil tempting Jesus; His teaching, and healing, the fishermen; and the call of Matthew. Today's message focuses on the importance of realzing that we need to find a church home. Jesus wants to be intimately involved in our lives, not just when we feel like it or when we are in trouble, but in all that we do. When we take the time to worship in church we not only get closer to Him we also find our way out of trouble much quicker.
Jesus knew that His purpose on earth was to do His Father's will which was revealed in Scripture of the Old Testament. "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;" (Isaiah 61:1-2). This Scripture was fulfilled in this great prophetic passage by Isaiah concerning the Messiah.
The first reported speech Jesus made was in the synagogue where He had been brought up from His childhood, it is here that He quoted Isaiah 61:1-2. "And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." (Luke 4:16-21).
The Scripture Jesus read contained a clear mention of all three Persons of the Trinity; the Holy Spirit (Spirit of the Lord), the Father (He), and Jesus (Anointed One). The people were amazed, but knew He clearly referred to Himself as the Messiah who had been foretold by Isaiah and other prophets, beginning with Genesis 3:15. They could not believe that the man talking to them was their long awaited Messiah, they were so infuriated at His equating Himself with God that they disrupted the worship service, seized Jesus, and attempted to push Him over a rocky precipice and put Him to death for blasphemy.
It is very easy to be mistaken when we follow our emotions rather than the truth revealed in God's Word! Some think they can get all their answers and worship God just as well while on the lake fishing or at home resting as they can in church. Jesus recognized the need to honor God by regularly attending worship services, we too need to follow His example by regularily attending a Bible bassed church.
Today's Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Jesus, so we can be confident that when we seek the heart of our Father we are also increasing in spiritual knowledge that comes from our loving relationship with You. Thank You also for the Holy Spirit, our Helper, whom You sent to teach us and to bring to remembrance all things that You have taught us through Scripture. Your knowledge will preserve us through the fiery trials of this life. In Jesus' name.....Amen.
Have a wonderful and blessed day!
God Bless You,
Christina
