First, my lawyer daughter put in five grueling years with a large law firm in Dallas as an "associate." I know first hand how they work those poor kids to death, keeping them there doing menial tasks and reading document reviews until all hours of the night as well as expecting them to work a lot of Saturdays and Sundays.
She got her mandatory five years in that gets one to the next level as an in-house attorney whereupon she quickly moved on to a large corporation where she works a normal 9 to 5 or less day. She's much happier and so is her family.
Now, to the reason I found this particular novel the least satisfying. Grisham always "ties up" his books in the final chapter. No so, with The Associate.
It left me with a ton of unanswered questions. Will the protagonist be killed because he refused witness protection? What about the fourth person present at the rape? He was never even brought into the plot. Who was the mole, both at the firm as well as during the final sting operation? Someone had to have tipped off The Handler. Who was The Handler and for whom did he work?
So, is it just me or do others who have read it feel the same? Do you think this was deliberate to set up a sequel? Grisham has never done a sequel, but what other answer could there be?
