Steve, I know what you mean about your vote not counting due to the Electoral College, but here in Florida we are a swing state and I promise you a vote for Obama. Working in academia, I agree that we should be looking to put the best and brightest in the White House. We should be celebrating the "elite," not turning the word into a pejorative as conservatives have. That having been said, a top-notch intellect is no guarantee of a successful presidency. Herbert Hoover and Jimmy Carter were among our brightest presidents, but neither one was very successful in the Oval Office.
I collected stamps as a kid. That helped me learn the names of obscure countries. But don't despair, you're not alone. There's a fellow named John McCain that wants to be president and has twice referred to the country of Czechoslovakia, a country that hasn't existed for 15 years.
